Jarlshof Prehistoric and Norse Settlement

Join us after-hours for a guided tour of Jarlshof and discover more than 4000 years of human settlement.

When the site is closed to the general public, explore the incredible site and journey from prehistory into history with a knowledgeable guide. Avoid the crowds and join us for an unforgettable experience.

Please check in at the visitor centre 10 minutes before the tour start time, and note that no toilet facilities are available at the site.

Tours last approx 1 hour, with 30 minutes at the end of the tour to allow for questions and exploring the site. The visitor centre will be open until 7pm.

Get directions

  • Visitors can use the level gravel car park of the Sumburgh Hotel.
  • The site is down a steep, 8m long ramp and 150m along a wide grass drive, which ends in a level gravel path.
  • The paths around the site are gravel, and bound stone. There are level changes and protruding archaeological remains. Some of the Iron Age buildings have narrow (50cm) and low entrances.
  • Access to the wheelhouse is down very uneven stone steps (no handrail).
  • The top of the laird’s house is reached via a modern, metal spiral staircase (with handrail).
  • There are no toilets on site.
