Shape: Long, narrow

Features: Channel cut in stone

Function: Channelled water

‘The undecorated appearance of this stone suggests that it was

meant to go unseen – probably high up. It is weathered, implying

that it was on the outside of the cathedral, and has a channel cut

into it. This tells us that it is a piece of guttering, used to throw rain

water away from the building and stop it damaging the walls. It may

once have been lined with lead.’
