Part of a cross shaft. On the front is a panel of interlace with 3 rows of vertical rings. This type of interlace pattern, consisting of simple plaited strands bound together by free rings was particularly popular at Whithorn. They give the impression of rather complicated interlace but are simpler to accomplish. There are two pellets among the strands near the base of the panel, and the lower margin uses fretwork, which is unusual at Whithorn.

On the back an interlace design has been incised but the background has not been cut away. Unfinished stones help us to understand how the patterns were created. ‘Whithorn School’ monuments like this one were probably carved during a fairly short period between 900AD and 1100AD.
